Introduction
Tan Sock Fong is a prominent glass artist and printmaker who received the Mobil Art Scholarship in 1988 and an overseas study bursary from the National Arts Council of Singapore, which allowed her to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Art and Design (Honors) with a focus on glass from the University of Wolverhampton in 1995. Since the 1980s, she has been an influential figure in Singapore's art community, serving as a teacher and advocate for the arts.
Sock Fong has taught at various institutions, including La Salle College of the Arts and Singapore Polytechnic, and played a key role in establishing Singapore’s first public printmaking studio in 1992. She also organized the country’s inaugural glass exhibition in 1993. Her contributions extend to various commissioned projects, including the recycling initiative GlassMorphosis, where she transformed a scrapped Boeing 737-200 into designer furniture.
Her artwork has been exhibited widely, both locally and internationally, with notable displays at venues such as the Singapore Art Museum and the Hsin Zhu Glass Museum in Taiwan. Recently, she designed a glass wall feature for Ng Teng Fong General Hospital. Throughout her career, Sock Fong has focused on innovative art practices and community engagement, solidifying her status as a key figure in Singapore's glass art scene.
